Trail Rescue Australia specialises in preventing and responding to incidents on remote trails and in complex terrain. We help individuals prepare, organisations strengthen their safety and response arrangements, and emergency services carry out demanding search and rescue operations.Approximately 70% of our work focuses on Preventative Trail Search and Rescue (PTSAR)—reducing the likelihood of incidents and improving readiness when something goes wrong. This includes:Trail response audits: Identifying gaps in emergency arrangements, communications, access, evacuation planning and staff readiness, with prioritised recommendations for improvement.Trail safety system reviews: Assessing how organisations prevent incidents, identify overdue or missing people, escalate concerns and activate an effective response.Expert embedded advisors: Working directly with your team to strengthen planning, guide safety decisions and support operational readiness for remote activities, events and field programs.Training and knowledge: Building practical skills, awareness and sound judgement through in-person and online training, specialised courses, realistic scenarios, live Q&As and our knowledge and community portal.Approximately 30% of our work is operational field response, including rapid response trail search and rescue, UAV-supported search and rescue, and standby support for remote activities and events. We also provide specialist personnel and capability to support Police-led search and rescue missions and other emergency service operations.Our focus is straightforward: reduce the frequency and severity of incidents on remote trails through training, awareness and education, and build specialised, multi-skilled response capabilities where they are needed.

All TRA services for individuals and organisations must be booked in advance, including standby response and support for remote activities, expeditions and events.Police and emergency services can request operational assistance without a prior booking, subject to personnel and equipment availability, in:Alice Springs, Northern Territory: April–September.Mansfield, Victoria: November–March.Assistance is provided in support of the requesting agency and under its operational direction. It focuses on reducing the chance of people becoming lost, overdue, isolated, unsupported or exposed through better planning, route understanding, communications, monitoring, check-in structure, field awareness and escalation logic. Trail Rescue Australia supports incidents involving lost, overdue, injured, unwell or incapacitated remote trail users—particularly where remote locations, difficult terrain or limited access complicate the response. No. Trail Rescue Australia is an independent, specialist trail safety and response organisation—not a statutory emergency service, public dispatch agency or 24/7 rescue service. We do not replace Police, Ambulance, SES, Parks incident systems or other formal emergency response arrangements.Our primary focus is Preventative Search and Rescue (PTSAR): helping people and organisations prevent incidents, improve preparedness and strengthen their response capabilities. We also provide prebooked standby response support for trail activities, events and expeditions.During our operational seasons on the Larapinta Trail, Australian Alps Walking Track and trekking expeditions in the Kimberley, our field capabilities include rapid trail incident response, trail medical support and UAV-assisted search. We work with individuals, groups and organisations whose activities take them onto remote trails, into complex terrain or beyond readily available assistance. Our customers range from recreational trail users preparing for a trip to organisations responsible for the safety of participants, guests, staff and field teams.Typical customers include:Individuals and recreational groups: Hikers, bushwalkers, trail runners, mountain bikers, dirt bike riders, cross-country skiers, hunters, photographers and remote-area 4WD travellers seeking practical preparation, training and safety advice.Expedition leaders, tour operators and event organisers: Those planning trekking expeditions, guided activities, trail events and adventure programs who need safety planning, specialist training, embedded advisors or prebooked standby response.Trail managers and wilderness tourism operators: Parks, private landholders, wilderness properties, remote lodges and adventure experience providers seeking trail response audits, trail safety system reviews, emergency procedures and staff training.Rangers and remote field teams: Park rangers, natural resource management workers, researchers and film crews who need practical safety arrangements and specialist support for work in isolated locations.Emergency services and response professionals: Police, paramedics, rescue personnel and other responders seeking specialist training or field capability to support operations in remote trail environments.We also provide remote-area safety services for enterprises and government organisations whose staff travel or work in isolated areas. We work alongside emergency services, land managers and a vetted network of specialists. Everyone involved in a TRA job is qualified and experienced for their part of it.Emergency services: We operate in a support role to Police, ambulance and other emergency services, never in place of them. When we’re involved in an incident, our job is to stabilise the situation and support the lead agency, then hand over cleanly. Our crew have supported NT Police search and rescue taskings with planning, decision support and UAV searches. In an emergency, always call 000 first.Land managers and landholders: We work with parks agencies, private landholders, stations and wilderness properties. We operate within their access conditions, permits and site requirements, and we respect the cultural protocols that apply on country.Our specialist network: Alongside our core team, we draw on pre-selected and approved specialists from civilian and military backgrounds. They include UAV pilots, pre-hospital care providers and specialists in navigation, extreme heat and remote-area operations. Every one of them is vetted before they work under the TRA name:All hold at least a wilderness first aid qualification.Specialists providing trail medical support and patient evacuations hold Cert IV in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Response (11208NAT).Aerial operations run under TRA’s CASA Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC), and every pilot holds a current Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) The organisations that engage us: Tour operators, event organisers, schools, rangers and response agencies. TRA is a specialist trail safety and response organisation, not a general outdoor safety provider and not a full time rescue organisation. Being clear about what we don’t do is part of how we keep our work credible, focused and relevant.Trail Rescue Australia specialises in preventative SAR, rapid response trail SAR and UAV support, trail safety and response systems, and remote-area incident support. We are selective about the work we accept so that our expertise, personnel and capabilities match the task.Specifically:We do not operate a public emergency call-out service. Services for individuals and organisations must be prebooked. Police and emergency services may request our assistance, subject to our seasonal locations and availability. In an emergency, always call 000 first.We do not replace statutory emergency services. Our involvement does not remove the need for Police, ambulance or other emergency services when an incident requires their capabilities or authority. We work in a support role to them.We do not work beyond our qualifications, capabilities or available resources. Our team provides pre-hospital emergency care, not definitive medical or clinical grade treatment. Our aerial UAV operations are flown by licensed remote pilots. Where additional expertise or emergency service involvement is required, we identify that need and engage our pre-selected contractor specialists.We do not operate in every environment and region. Our services focus on remote areas and complex terrain. We specialise in desert, arid and savannah environments, with services also available in other remote regions, including the Australian Alps and Wet Tropics, where the task matches our expertise and capabilities.We do not provide our services free of charge. TRA is a private company, not a government agency. Our fees reflect the service, scope of work and resources required, with costs agreed before an engagement begins. We recommend all outdoor users opt for insurance cover, particularly through their Garmin, SPOT or Zoleo subscriptions ( International SOS or Overwatch x Rescue (OxR)) or seperate outdoor insurance options for their hike or outdoor activity.Every enquiry is assessed against the activity, environment, potential consequences and level of support required. We take on work where we can make a practical, credible contribution to prevention, preparedness and response. UAV Search and Rescue (UAV-SAR) Drone-supported search and rescue: thermal search, aerial reconnaissance, real-time relay, illumination, broadcast and payload resupply, in support of field teams and emergency services. Trail Medical Support (TMS) Baseline trail medical support for hikers, trekkers, expedition groups, Rangers and remote-area operations: first aid, preventative trail health care, casualty monitoring, medical resupply and evacuation support.
